Dear Hilary

Welcome back!  We made it to another school year.

We hope you enjoy this "Back to School" issue of SEGway. We know you are busy so we have focused on a few key issues.

First, we take it back to fundamentals and share with you are thoughts on why evidence matters.  Second, we present a new feature designed to encourage broader thinking on a topic of interest where you can share your views.  Third, we invite you to meet with me one on one at the upcoming EdNet conference to help answer your research and assessment questions and to find out how we can help you address these needs.

Good luck and have a great year!

Evidence Matters

Students have a right to receive instruction that includes solutions that have been proven effective.  While you may believe that your intervention is effective and you have heard from customers or colleagues that it "works", that's not enough.

Administrators, teachers and school buyers want more than anecdotal evidence and unsubstantiated claims; they want hard evidence--scientifically-based research. ESSA, the current guiding federal education legislation, allows schools to use funds only for solutions with demonstrated effectiveness based on technically sound research.

Simply put, schools want proven solutions.  With more product and intervention choices for schools than ever before, publishers and technology providers need to be armed with technically sound effectiveness research to compete.

With 40 yeas of experience and more than 100 studies we can help. Please contact us to find out how we can help you be successful.

TalkBack

Artificial Intelligence in Education

There is a vast hive of knowledge among our readers.  To harvest that wisdom, we have created a new feature for SEGway called "TalkBack".  We will choose a topic of current or future educational importance, share some initial thoughts and pose some questions for you to think about, respond to and share with your fellow readers.

Our topic for this issue is the impact of artificial intelligence on education. While discussions of artificial intelligence over the past several decades have focused on whether or not artificial intelligence would ever equal human-level intelligence, that discussion has shifted.  Increasingly, the question posed is what will happen when artificial intelligence exceeds the capabilities of human intelligence.  Artificial intelligence is now not only expected to be a part of our intellectual landscape, it may well be the dominant mode in the not so distant future.

Artificial Intelligence has begun to have a significant impact on many areas of our culture.  Financial services--purchasing and selling stocks and other financial instruments--is relying increasingly on artificial intelligence. Education is certainly not immune from this change.  Wesee artificial intelligence finding its way into instruction, assessment and school administration.

What are your thoughts?......

  1. What impact do you feel artificial intelligence will have on instruction?
  2. What impact do you feel artificial intelligence will have on assessment?
  3. What other impact will artificial intelligence have on other areas of education?

Please email your thoughts to

hrickert@segmeasurement.com. We will share your thoughts with our colleagues in a future issue of SEGway.
